“My ‘belief’ began with an experience of being loved, and that experience was then tested in communion with others who were touched by the same images.  Those who taught me helped me question and refine my experience.  Above all, I was touched by the example of those who loved others, really loved them and believed that they had more in common with others (of whatever belief or disbelief) than could possibly divide them.  Later, I would call this strong sense of solidarity communion.”  p. xv
