Stan’s Corner, Sunday, July 24
Last Thursday, Judie and I saw the musical “Show Boat” at the Goodspeed Opera House. It was originally done on Broadway in 1927. Yes, you heard me, eighty four years ago, and among other things, it pioneered the idea that a musical could make a social commentary on our culture. The play was going on as usual until it used a word which must have been shocking in its day, and even now is not what you would call a household word; and that word is miscegenation. It simply refers to an inter-racial marriage, which was illegal in some states at the time the play was written. It was ahead of its time.
